Pearls
She wore them every Sunday and
for any other special occasion.
They weren't the long strands
whose beads, while dipping down
toward the center, gradually become
larger. Nor were her pearls of the oval
variety. No, hers was a short necklace,
laying close to the collarbone, each
bead fatly round and almost identical
to its neighbor in size. Sometimes
she wore pearls that were purple-
gray and sometimes she wore
multiple strands of layered white,
but most of the time they were just
a single line of beads. White circles,
like mini moons softly strung together.
Those were the necklaces she wore.
